Best overall book on dating for women

If I'm So Wonderful, Why Am I Still Single? by Susan Page

This is the book that I wish I had read when I was single. Susan Page delivers easy-to-understand, helpful dating advice as well as exercises designed to help you practice what she suggests

The author starts by addressing some of the hidden reasons that women continue to be single despite their best efforts to find a partner. These include ambivalence, unhelpful advice from family and friends, and settling for less than you deserve.

Next, she covers the importance of knowing what you want in a relationship and how to say no to anything that isn’t it. And, she discussed the relationship patterns that keep us stuck with partners who won’t commit and can’t be intimate.

She also provides guidance on how to grow self-awareness and self-esteem and offers helpful tips for noticing and silencing the negative voice inside your head

As many singles wrestle with loneliness, she offers tips on how to overcome the feeling of isolation that many feel in a partnered world and offers actionable steps to ensure that her readers are able to have a happy, fulfilling life while being single.

Finally, she shares tips and tactics for developing a dating strategy to achieve your ultimate goal.

The author does an excellent job of covering many of the issues that my clients wrestle with and that I address in my 12-week program.  Highly recommended if you prefer to self-coach yourself through dating.

Best advice from a mother to her daughters

Before Falling In Love, Read This List  by Kristin Armstrong

No matter how good a relationship you may have had with your mother, sometimes the important things don't get said.  This article shares 3 things that every women's mother should tell them about dating, love, and relationships.  Her daughters are lucky to have her as a mother!

Best for developing a dating mindset

Nine Things Successful People Do Differently by Heidi Grant Halvorson

This book has 9 killer suggestions that you can make to better achieve your goals. Any of the author's recommendations can be applied to either your job or personal life making it especially useful.

While all of the recommendations in this book are powerful, my favorite is #4:  Be a realistic optimist. This recommendation encourages the reader to "think about the obstacles and temptations that are likely to arise when pursuing your goal” and then make a plan to deal with them. Grant Halvorson calls it an if-then plan. If my date doesn’t show up, then...?

As the author points out, no matter what your goal is, you are going to encounter obstacles.  The most successful people anticipate problems and have a plan for how to overcome them.

This mindset can be especially helpful for dating which can be full of awkward moments and missed connections. How are you going to handle these types of challenges when they come up?  How will you ensure that the first bump in the road doesn't discourage you from continuing courageously toward your goal?

Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything  by BJ Fogg, PhD

BJ Fogg is an American social scientist and research associate at Stanford University. An expert in Behavior Design, he has uncovered the specific steps that will allow you to overcome resistance, change your behavior and achieve your goals.

The secret is to identify the one step you can take that generates no resistance at all and build from there.  If dating or even writing a dating profile brings up enough resistance to make cleaning the house sound more fun, you will want to read this book.

Best for overcoming rejection

Emotional First Aid: Healing Rejection, Guilt, Failure, and Other Everyday Hurts by Guy Winch

In this wonderful book, Guy Winch sets out to help his readers overcome the types of hurts that come from being human.

It's an excellent resource for those moments when someone that we had hoped would be our happily ever after turns out to be more frog than prince.  The author explains why rejection is so painful and offers a number of practical suggestions to reduce and relieve suffering.

If you or someone you know is smarting from the pain of rejection this is an excellent self-coaching resource to aid in healing that injury.
