If you’ve been dating for a while and haven’t seen the results you had hoped for, it may be time to consider getting help. A therapist or dating coach can be very effective at helping you overcome dating issues like:

  • Understanding why you date the same kind of person over and over.
  • Identifying what you want and need in a relationship and how to find a partner who meets your criteria.
  • Managing dating anxiety.
  • Reducing dating disappointment and maintaining momentum until you find "the one."

How do you find the right dating coach for you? How do you ensure you get the results you are looking for from your investment? Here are some tips:

Make sure that the dating coach specializes in your area of need

Some dating coaches work exclusively with men, others with women. Some coaches work with younger clients, while others work with clients over 35. Some coaches work with all types of clients. Choose a coach who focuses on working with clients like you.

Ask yourself, does their content resonate with me

Visit their website. Read some of their blog posts, and watch their videos. Some dating coaches focus on helping women understand men better. Others focus on healing yourself. I prefer a more empowered approach, so I focus on supporting successful professional women to leverage skills they already have to find love faster. Choose the approach that makes the most sense to you.

Identify 3-5 potential dating coaches and set up sample sessions

Most coaches offer free sample sessions. These sessions will allow you to tell the coach a bit about what you hope to achieve with coaching and for the coach to show you their coaching style. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask the coach questions.   Here are some questions you should ask your dating coach.

  • Are they trained as a coach?

This is crucial. Coaching is based on scientific research, and trained coaches use coaching models proven to create change. To learn the models and leverage them effectively, coaches need to attend an accredited training program.

  • Is the coach qualified/accredited/certified?

Your coach should be certified. This guarantees that they've completed an accredited training, have coached for a significant number of hours, and adhere to industry-accepted ethical standards. It is the difference between coaching and someone just giving you their opinion on what you should do.

  • What is their coaching style?

Each coach will work differently based on their personality and training. Some coaches' sessions are organized and structured, while others are more exploratory.

Some coaches tend to be warmer and more supportive while others may be more logical and quicker to challenge your patterns of thinking and behavior. Asking about their style will help you determine if their style aligns with your needs or if you need to keep searching.

  • What is the coach’s program, and is it within your budget (or close)?

If your coach specializes in your area of need, the coach should have a process or program for delivering results for their clients. Depending on your challenge, a coach may recommend anywhere from 4-12 sessions.   They should have a process that is easily understandable.

  • What does the coaching program include?

Some coaches will help you write your dating app bio. Some will allow you unlimited text messages during the engagement. So will offer additional sessions or 10-minute tune-up calls between sessions.

  • What type of results have they delivered?
  • Coaches should be able to share some success stories, but remember that coaching is confidential so your coach should not be able to put you in touch with their clients. And while their success with other people may feel compelling, what matters, in the end, is their success with you. The best way to ensure the results you are seeking from your coach is by choosing a well-trained, certified, experienced coach.

Consider how comfortable you feel with each dating coach

Coaching provides an opportunity for you to close the gap between where you are and where you want to be and achieve your dreams. But this is only possible if you feel you are in a safe and judgment-free space with your coach. If you don’t feel comfortable being who you are with your coach, chances are they won’t be as helpful as they could be.

After you have had a conversation with at least two or three life coaches the next step is to choose the one that is the best fit for you. When you do this, be sure to commit 100% to the coaching processes. It is the surest way for you to ensure results. Good luck!
